The Book of Ezekiel

Prophecy: Israel

Ezekiel 33-34

Lesson X

From Chapters 25 to 32 the prophecies were directed to Israel’s Gentile enemies.

These two chapters turn our attention again to the Nation of Israel.

Notice Ezekiel 33:2,12,17,30.

Here the Prophet is directed to speak to “the children of thy people.”  Ezekiel’s people are the Jews of the Nation of Israel.

Ezekiel 33:7,10,11,20

The house of Israel is mentioned by name.

Ezekiel 33:21

A messenger had brought word to Ezekiel about the capture of Jerusalem.

Ezekiel 33:28,29

Prophecies of future desolations of the land of Israel are made at this time.

Thus the whole 33rd chapter is focused on Israel, her people and her land.

J.B Pritchard wrote: “Behold the Jew and believe.  Believe the Bible.  Behold the Jew and tremble for the judgments coming upon the earth.  Behold the Jew and rejoice for the glorious rapture that awaits the believer when Jesus comes and for the world-wide blessings in Christ’s Millennial Reign.”

Ezekiel chapter thirty-three.

Ezekiel 33:1-7

(1) Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

(2) Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:

(3) If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;

(4) Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.

(5) He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.

(6) But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take [any] person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.

(7) So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.

Ezekiel 33:1-6 The words are addressed to the watchmen in Israel.

Ezekiel 33:7  Ezekiel is told that he is one of them.  “O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel.”

The work of the watchman was to warn both the righteous and the wicked.

Acts 20: 28-31

(28) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

(29) For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

(30) Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

(31) Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

Acts 20: 28-31

To the Ephesian Elders, Paul said: “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, which he hath purchased with His own blood.  For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves (they are not sheep) enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.  Therefore, watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.”

Colossians 1:28

(28) Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

Colossians 1:28 “Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom....”

So this business of “warning men” is not confined to the people of Israel nor to the book of Ezekiel.

Ezekiel 33:8-20

(8) When I say unto the wicked, O wicked [man], thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked [man] shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

(9) Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

(10) Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins [be] upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?

(11) Say unto them, [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

(12) Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his [righteousness] in the day that he sinneth.

(13) When I shall say to the righteous, [that] he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

(14) Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;

(15) [If] the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

(16) None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.

(17) Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.

(18) When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.

(19) But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.

(20) Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

Romans 11:7

(7) What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

Ezekiel 33:8-20

Within the Nation of Israel lines are clearly drawn between “the righteous” and “the wicked.

Between the “saved” and the “unsaved.”

Between the “believers and the “unbelievers.”

Between the “election” and the “rest” of the Nation (Romans 11:7).

The passage clearly teaches that the ways of God in dealing with the righteous or the wicked are always right.

Ezekiel 33:11 “God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked” and continues to plead, “turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways for why will ye die, O house of Israel.”

Well has C.S. Lewis written: “Hell will be God’s answer to those who have chosen to leave Him out of their lives.”

Ezekiel 33: 21-22

(21) And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, [that] one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten.

(22) Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.

Jeremiah 52:12

(12) Now in the fifth month, in the tenth [day] of the month, which [was] the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, [which] served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem,

Ezekiel 24:25-27

(25) Also, thou son of man, [shall it] not [be] in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,
(26) [That] he that escapeth in that day shall come unto thee, to cause [thee] to hear [it] with [thine] ears?
(27) In that day shall thy mouth be opened to him which is escaped, and thou shalt speak, and be no more dumb: and thou shalt be a sign unto them; and they shall know that I [am] the LORD.

Ezekiel 33: 21-22

The predicted fall of Jerusalem had been fulfilled, “on the tenth day of the fifth month” (Jeremiah 52:12), but the news did not reach the Jewish Captives in Babylon until “the 5th day of the 10th month.”  Ezekiel 33:21.  That news was brought to Ezekiel by one who had escaped out of the city of Jerusalem.  And from that moment on Ezekiel was no more dumb.  Another prophecy was literally fulfilled.  See Ezekiel 24:25-27

Ezekiel 33: 23-29

(23) Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

(24) Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we [are] many; the land is given us for inheritance.

(25) Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?

(26) Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife: and shall ye possess the land?

(27) Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; [As] I live, surely they that [are] in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that [is] in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that [be] in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.

(28) For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.

(29) Then shall they know that I [am] the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.

Ezekiel 33: 23-29

It was at that time, the prophecy was repeated that more judgment was to fall on the land of Israel.  The destruction of the city of Jerusalem was not the end of the judgments.

Notice verses 28, 29  The word “desolate” is found three times.

Why was there to be further destruction?

Ezekiel 33:29-32 Answers that question.

Because of their continued abominations and because “for with their mouth they shew much love but their heart goeth after covetousness.” Verse 31 “And, lo, thou art unto them a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words but they do them not”.  Compare  Luke 16:15,16;  Matthew 15:7-9.

Ezekiel 33:29-32

(29) Then shall they know that I [am] the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.

(30) Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.

(31) And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee [as] my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, [but] their heart goeth after their covetousness.

(32) And, lo, thou [art] unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.

Luke 16:15-16

(15) And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

(16) The law and the prophets [were] until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

Matthew 15:7-9

(7) [Ye] hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,

(8) This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me.

(9) But in vain they do worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men.

Ezekiel 33:33 We should know that Ezekiel was a true prophet because what he prophesied about the Land of Israel has come to pass.

Cf Deuteronomy 18:22.  Note the words “lo, it will come to pass” and compare with Ezekiel 36:36

Ezekiel 33:33

(33) And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.

Deuteronomy 18:22

(22) When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that [is] the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, [but] the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Ezekiel 36:36

(36) Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined [places, and] plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken [it], and I will do [it].

.

Ezekiel chapter thirty-four.

The chapter could be divided into two parts:

Ezekiel 34:1-10          The false shepherds in Israel.

Ezekiel 34:11-31        The true Shepherd who will come to Israel.

Ezekiel 34:1-10

(1) And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

(2) Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe [be] to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?

(3) Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: [but] ye feed not the flock.

(4) The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up [that which was] broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.

(5) And they were scattered, because [there is] no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.

(6) My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill: yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek [after them].

(7) Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;

(8) [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because [there was] no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

(9) Therefore, O ye shepherds, hear the word of the LORD;

(10) Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I [am] against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.

Ezekiel 34:2-10  The words are against the shepherds in Israel (also in verse 10).

We have already commented on the fact that such words are often used in Ezekiel.  How dreadful to have the Lord against you!

We observe that in speaking about Israel, the Lord says: “my sheep” in verse 6; “my flock” four times in verse 8, and “my flock” twice in verse 10.  God’s people both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament are likened to “sheep.”

Psalm 23; Psalm100:3; Matthew 10:6; John 10:27 are some examples.

Psalm 23

(A Psalm of David.)

(1) The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want.

(2) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

(3) He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

(4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

(5) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

(6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm100:3

(3) Know ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Matthew 10:6

(6) But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

John 10:27

(27) My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Never are God’s people called “dogs and sows” (2 Peter 2:22).

2 Peter 2:22

(22) But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog [is] turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Judgment had been pronounced against the Nations that had become enemies of Israel, and now judgment is pronounced against the leaders in Israel: those who were called the shepherds of the flock of God.

Ezekiel 34:2  “Woe to the shepherds.”

Notice that word “woe” in Isaiah 3:9,11;  Isaiah  5:8,11,18,21,22.

And the word can be found in all the writings of the other Prophets.

Isaiah 3:9,11

Isaiah  5:8,11,18,21,22

Ezekiel 34:8  Why the judgment?  The shepherds were feeding themselves but not the sheep.  Read verse 8 again.

(8) [As] I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because [there was] no shepherd, neither did my shepherds search for my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;

2 Peter 2:1-3

(1) But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

(2) And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

(3) And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Ezekiel 34:4

(4) The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up [that which was] broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.

1 Peter 5:1-3

(1) The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

(2) Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight [thereof], not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

(3) Neither as being lords over [God's] heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

2 Peter 2:1-3 identifies false teachers as those who make merchandise of God’s people.

It would seem to me we see this mark on many a big name preacher of our day.   These false shepherds had no compassion on the diseased, sick and bruised.

Ezekiel 34:4 But “with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.” (See the tactics of some healing evangelists today and the words used in this text describe them.)

1 Peter 5:1-3 Peter exhorts the elders to “tend the flock not for filthy lucre (that is, material gain) and not as lords over God’s heritage.”

How difficult to seems for some men to be “leaders” without being “lords.”  If God was against unfaithful shepherds in Israel in the days of Ezekiel, is He not against the same kind of men today?

Ezekiel 34:11-22

(11) For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, [even] I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

(12) As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep [that are] scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

(13) And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country.

(14) I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and [in] a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.

(15) I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.

(16) I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up [that which was] broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment.

(17) And [as for] you, O my flock, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I judge between cattle and cattle, between the rams and the he goats.

(18) [Seemeth it] a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?

(19) And [as for] my flock, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.

(20) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD unto them; Behold, I, [even] I, will judge between the fat cattle and between the lean cattle.

(21) Because ye have thrust with side and with shoulder, and pushed all the diseased with your horns, till ye have scattered them abroad;

(22) Therefore will I save my flock, and they shall no more be a prey; and I will judge between cattle and cattle.

Ezekiel 34:11-22 We could sum-up these verses with one statement.  Here are great promises to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Look at verse 11: “Behold, I even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.”  Perhaps that verse should have a bearing on how we interpret Luke 15:3-7.

Luke 15:3-7

(3) And he spake this parable unto them, saying,

(4) What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?

(5) And when he hath found [it], he layeth [it] on his shoulders, rejoicing.

(6) And when he cometh home, he calleth together [his] friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.

(7) I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Again in verse 12: “As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so will I seek out my sheep.”  And again verse 13: “I will bring them ... gather them form the countries, and will bring them to their own land.” What land?  The verse tells us plainly: “the mountains of Israel.”

Verse 14: “I will feed them in good pasture”.  Where? “Upon the high mountains of Israel.”

Verse 15: “I will feed my flock and I will cause them to lie down…”

This verse reminds one of Psalm 23:1-2.  Whoever thinks of applying that Psalm to Israel first?

Remember Romans 1:16 the gospel is to the Jew first.

Romans 1:16

(16) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Verse 16:  What the false shepherds and prophets failed to do (verse 4), the True Shepherd will yet do!

Verses 17-21: The True Shepherd will also judge the flock.  Perhaps this will be fulfilled in the day of the separation of the sheep from the goats as described in Matthew 25:31-34

Matthew 25:31-34

(31) When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

(32) And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth [his] sheep from the goats:

(33) And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

(34) Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Verse 22: In that day He will save His flock.

Ezekiel 34:23-31 Here are more promises to His flock of Israel.

 Ezekiel 34:23-31

(23) And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, [even] my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.

(24) And I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the LORD have spoken [it].

(25) And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

(26) And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing.

(27) And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them.

(28) And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make [them] afraid.

(29) And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more.

(30) Thus shall they know that I the LORD their God [am] with them, and [that] they, [even] the house of Israel, [are] my people, saith the Lord GOD.

(31) And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, [are] men, [and] I [am] your God, saith the Lord GOD.

Ezekiel 34:23-24 “I will set one shepherd over them, even my servant David.”

The reference must be to David’s Greater Son.  See Jeremiah 23:5,6; Jeremiah 30:3,9; Hosea 3:5; Isaiah 9:6-7.

Jeremiah 23:5-6

(5) Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

(6) In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Jeremiah 30:3, 9

(3) For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

(9) But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

Hosea 3:5

(5) Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king; and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.

Isaiah 9:6-7

(6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

(7) Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Elsewhere David’s Greater Son is identified as the Servant of Jehovah.  Zechariah 3:8; Isaiah 42:1; Isaiah 52:13,14.

Zechariah 3:8

(8) Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they [are] men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

Isaiah 42:1

(1) Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, [in whom] my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Isaiah 52:13-14

(13) Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

(14) As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

Thus, King David of history became a type of Christ in His sufferings.

Ezekiel 34:25  A promise of a covenant of peace with Israel.

This promise is repeated in Ezekiel 36:26.  Remember the covenants belong to Israel (Romans 9:4).  See Jeremiah 31:31,32;  Hebrews 8:8.

Before this covenant is realized, Israel will have made a covenant “with death and with hell.”  See Isaiah 28:15.  A covenant that will be confirmed by the Anti-Christ for seven years, but broken after three and one half years (Daniel 9:27).

Ezekiel 36:26

(26) A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Romans 9:4

(4) Who are Israelites; to whom [pertaineth] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises;

Jeremiah 31:31-32

(31) Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

(32) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day [that] I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:

Hebrews 8:8

(8) For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Isaiah 28:15

(15) Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

Daniel 9:27

(27) And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Ezekiel 34:26

When the True Shepherd makes His covenant with Israel, the result will be showers of blessing.”  How often I have joined in singing the old hymn, without knowing that the original promise belongs to Israel and not the Church!  We have become partakers of the root and fatness of the olive tree (Romans 11:17).

Romans 11:17

(17) And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree;

Ezekiel 34:27

“...they shall be safe in their land.”  Israel is certainly not dwelling safely in their land today.  Look at the news!  The promise has not yet been fulfilled.

Ezekiel 34:28

“They shall no more be a prey to the heathen.  Again it is written “they shall dwell safely.”

Ezekiel 34:29

The promise of “a plant of renown”.  A.C. Gaebelien writes: “ this speaks of Christ”.

I am not so sure.  A few years ago I found the following report.  “A wonder grass with multiple uses and a promising commercial future has been developed in Israel’s Negev Desert.  Its growers claim it can reduce water pollution, cheaply substitute for wood pulp in the production of high-quality paper and do many more things.”

I am not suggesting that this is the fulfillment of the prophecy, but it does illustrate how easily God can fulfill His word.

Ezekiel 34:30 “I the LORD their God am with them…”

We believe this verse, and also verses 23-29, can only be fulfilled when King Jesus comes back to establish His Millennial Kingdom with its center in Jerusalem.

I quote another:

“The King is coming in glory.  What a day of glory it will be for Him when He comes back to earth!  It will be a day of glory for Him because the Word of Scripture will be vindicated and verified.  Men have scoffed. 2 Peter 3:3 ‘Where is the promise of His coming?’  Men have not believed.  Men have ridiculed.  But there will be no scoffing then!  There will be no ridiculing then.  All will bow before the King.  It will be the great day of glory for Him for He will see the travail of His soul and be satisfied.  He suffered, He now reigns.  He bore the cross, He now wears the crown.  It will be a day of glory for Him for He comes in His own glory.  He comes in His Father’s glory.  He comes in the glory of the holy angels, for all the holy angels will be with Him.  He will be the victorious King.  He went to the cross in victory. Colossians 2:14.  He is victor now.  Romans 14:9.  He will be Victor then.  Showing to His Creation that He is King of kings and Lord of lords.”

2 Peter 3:3

(3) Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

Colossians 2:14

(14) Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Romans 14:9

(9) For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

Ezekiel 34:31

We have not been speculating.  “And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.”  How can such words be spiritualized away?

Blessings to Israel are yet to come.  Note the order of prediction in Deuteronomy 30:1-5

Deuteronomy 30:1-5

(1) And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call [them] to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,

(2) And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;

(3) That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.

(4) If [any] of thine be driven out unto the outmost [parts] of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:

(5) And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers.

Review of chapters 1 through 34

1.     God made choice of the Nation of Israel, called her out from the Nations of the world to be different.

2.     Israel, departed from God, sinned against Him and became like the Nations in sin and in idolatry.

3.     Therefore, Israel was driven from her land and scattered among the Nations of the world.  The people of Israel have suffered greatly where ever they have been.  All of this was first in prophecy in the Book of Ezekiel, but now it has become actual history.

4.     The Nations that surround Israel rejoiced in Israel’s judgments.

5.     Therefore, God judged those Nations and destroyed their cities.  The evidence of this destruction remains to this day.  But note again, all this was prophecy in Ezekiel but now has become history.

6.     In Ezekiel 34, the Prophet predicts blessings yet to come to this same Nation.  Note the order of prediction in Deuteronomy 30:1-5.

7.     Ezekiel chapter 34 has never been fulfilled.  Will it not have the same kind of fulfillment as the preceding chapters?

8.     The chapters we are about to consider outline events that will precede the final promised blessing that will yet come to the Nation of Israel.

The whole purpose of all this detailed history of the past is to prove that History is God’s story.  That He has been involved in the history of Nations and He will yet be involved in the days to come.  The promised blessings are of such a nature that only God can fulfill them and only by the return of Christ to earth will these promises be fulfilled.

When one studies the Old Testament in detail about the land and the people of Israel, one is convinced that a Millennial reign of Christ is a necessity.  It is only by spiritualizing the promises made to Israel and making them apply to the Church that one can dispense with the 1000- year reign of Christ.  Sadly, this has been the pattern of Church history.
