Genesis to Esther Series –
Lesson 10
The Family Of Adam
Genesis 1-5
We now come to
the next few lessons where we are going to deal with some very sobering things that have to do with our living now.
1. The Family Created.
We have
considered, first of all, The Family Created. These facts are found in Genesis,
chapters one and two.
2. The Family Fallen
1. Details Are In Genesis, Chapter Three
The details of
the Family Fallen are in Genesis,
chapter three.
F Genesis 1: 1 – You are introduced to God.
F Genesis 2 – You are introduced to Adam and Eve.
F Genesis 3 – You are introduced to Satan.
2. The First Man, Adam,
Brought Into The Human Race:
Both Sin And Death.
Romans 5: 12
(12) Wherefore, as by one man sin
entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for
that all have sinned:
Sin is very
real. Death is very real. And fools
mock sin and death!
Proverbs 14: 9
(9) Fools make a mock at sin:
but among the righteous there is favour.
3. The Human Race – (All Of It – In God’s Sight)
Is Fallen, Lost, Ungodly, Sinful,
Wicked, And Vile.
GOD ALONE IS HOLY
Man is unholy
(in God’s sight).
How unholy is
man? – It depends on who is looking. It depends on where one looks. Don’t forget, God looks on the heart!
The human race
(All of it – in God’s sight) is fallen, lost, ungodly, sinful, wicked and vile.
The following Scriptures prove that.
1 Samuel 16: 7
(7) But the Lord said unto Samuel,
Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have
refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man
seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance,
but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Genesis 6: 5
(5) And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the
earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.
Genesis 8: 21
(21) And the Lord smelled a sweet
savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the
ground any more for man’s sake, for the imagination of man’s
heart is evil from his youth;
Psalm 14: 2-3
(2) The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of
men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
(3) They are all gone
aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that
doeth good, no, not one.
Jeremiah 17: 9-10
(9) The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Romans 3: 23
(23) For all have
sinned, and come short of the glory of God:
Romans 1: 24-32
(24) Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through
the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between
themselves:
(25) Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and
worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for
ever Amen.
(26) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections:
for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against
nature:
(27) And likewise also the men,
leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one
toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,
and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
(28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their
knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are
not convenient;
(29) Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication,
wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit,
malignity; whisperers,
(30) Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters,
inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
(31) Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without
natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
(32) Who knowing the judgment of God, that the which commit
such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them
that do them.
Romans 3: 10-18
(10) As it is written, There is none
righteous, no, not one:
(11) There is none that
understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
(12) They are all gone out of the way, they are together
become unprofitable; there is none that
doeth good, no, not one.
(13) Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues
they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their
lips:
(14) Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
(15) Their feet are swift to shed blood:
(16) Destruction and misery are in their ways:
(17) And the way of peace have
they not known:
(18) There is no fear of God before their eyes.
4. Fallen Man’s Greatest Need Is:
To Be Saved From Sin And Death.
Fallen man’s greatest need is to be
saved from sin and death. And how foolish, to think that man can save himself, or keep himself.
MAN CANNOT SAVE HIMSELF
1 Timothy 1: 15
(15) This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all
acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of
whom I am chief.
Luke 19: 10
(10) For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that
which was lost.
Acts 4: 12
(12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for
there is none other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be saved.
MAN CANNOT KEEP HIMSELF SAVED
Jude 24
(24) Now unto him that is
able to keep you from falling, and to
present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy.
1 Peter 1: 5
(5) Who are kept by the power of God through
faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
3. The Family Divided
1. Genesis, Chapter Four
In Genesis,
chapter four, you have a list of names of those without
faith. –
The Unrighteous Line.
2. Genesis, Chapter Five
In Genesis,
chapter five, you have a list of names of those with faith.
– The Righteous Line.
2 Thessalonians 3: 2
(2) And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and
wicked men: for all men have not faith.
3. The History Of These Chapters Is Verified In The New Testament.
Now let’s take
our Bibles and we will read from these verses very quickly, to show you, that you
cannot believe the New
Testament, if you don’t
believe the Old Testament.
Matthew 23: 35
It is a connection with
this history.
(35) That upon you may come all the righteous
blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the
blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew
between the temple and the altar.
The Jews of
that day, knew who this latter
man was – this
Zacharias. We don’t know, but they knew. But we do know
from the Bible who Abel is. And Abel
is presented in the New Testament as being the first martyr
of history.
Hebrews 11: 4
(4) By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than
Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God
testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet
speaketh.
So that verse verifies
Genesis, chapter four.
Hebrews 12: 24
(24) And to Jesus the mediator of the new
covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things
than that of Abel.
If you are
going to believe in the shedding of the blood of Jesus, you have to believe that Abel shed blood back in the book of Genesis; because, here
in Hebrews, the blood of Jesus and the blood of Abel are in the same
context.
I am simply
pointing out the historical
connection of the New Testament
with the Old.
1 John 3: 12
(12) Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his
brother
And so, if you
are going to believe the New Testament, again, you have to believe
the Old Testament.
All of these
verses, you will observe, have to do with this man Abel, and also of Cain.
Jude 11
(11) Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain,
and ran greedily after the error of Balaam
It moves on
from Abel to Enoch. Enoch is mentioned in the fifth chapter of Genesis.
Hebrews 11: 5
(5) By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see
death; and was not found, because God had translated him:
for before his translation he had this testimony, that he
pleased God.
Jude 14
(14) And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam,
In one sweeping
statement, you go from the first chapter of Genesis, right over to the fifth
chapter of Genesis.
And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these,
saying, Behold, the Lord cometh
4. Genesis, Chapters 1-5,
There Are A Number Of “Firsts”
In Genesis, chapters one to five, you
have a number of firsts.
Y The
first home
Y The
first family
Y The
first birth
Y The
first murder
Y The
first martyr
Y The
first funeral
Y The
first conflict
Enoch – The Man Of Faith
I have a sermon outline that I have
preached on many occasions on Enoch -- the man of faith. I shall go over it for
your benefit, and trust it will be a blessing to you.
Let’s read from Genesis. You have a whole list of people who lived
and died.
Genesis 5: 18-24
(18) And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he
begat Enoch:
(19) And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred
years, and begat sons and daughters:
(20) And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and
two years: and he died.
(21) And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat
Methuselah:
You all know
who Methuselah was. He is the man who lived longer than
anybody else – 969 years. He lived almost for a millennium.
When I say that word, I get excited. A millennium is going to come in fifteen
years, whether we like it or not. It is not maybe going to be THE millennium, but a millennium is going to be here. And
can you stop and think of a man living
for almost that long!
Methuselah
lived for 969 years. And incidentally, he begat sons and
daughters all that time. Can you imagine how many grandkids he had, to sit on
his knee? It is beyond your imagination.
(21) And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat
Methuselah:
(22) And Enoch walked with God after he
begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
(23) And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and
five years:
(24) And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took
him.
What a change
in that chapter!
Hebrews 11: 5
(5) By faith Enoch was translated that he should
not see death; and was not found, because God
had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he
pleased God.
1. Jude Tells Us About Enoch:
Jude 14, 15
(14) And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied
of these, saying, Behold, the Lord
cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
(15) To execute judgment upon
all, and to convince all that are ungodly among
them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all
their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
We have some
facts here, regarding Enoch, that you do not have in the Old Testament.
1. Enoch
prophesied. A prophet was a preacher -- and so Enoch
was
a preacher.
2. He
also prophesied, “Behold the Lord Cometh.”
He preached, what we would
call, now, Bible Prophecy. Enoch
was a preacher, and he
preached prophecy.
3. Verse
15 - He preached righteousness.
4. He
preached judgment.
So Enoch
preached righteousness, and he also preached judgment. And you can be quite sure, he wasn’t very popular.
For a man to preach judgment, that is not a
popular theme, but that is what Jude did.
2. Hebrews Tells Us About Enoch:
So, we are told
that Enoch is a preacher, and he is a
preacher of prophecy.
Hebrews 11: 5
(5) By faith Enoch was translated that he should
not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before
his translation he had this testimony, that he
pleased God.
Enoch was a man of faith. And it goes on to say that, before his translation, he had this testimony – that he pleased God.
Y Enoch was a man of faith.
Y He pleased God.
Y Enoch had a good testimony.
Y Enoch did not die.
That is a
revelation of God. And if we cannot
believe what is in the Bible, then we cannot believe what the Bible says
regarding us.
3. Genesis Tells Us: Enoch
Walked With God
Jude tells us
Enoch preached prophecy.
Hebrews tells
us Enoch pleased God.
Genesis tells
us Enoch walked with God.
1. Walking With God Implies: He
Had Met God
Genesis 5: 21-22
(21) And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and (then) begat
Methuselah:
(22) And Enoch walked with God after he
begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
Enoch lived 65
years, and THEN he begat his son. And at the birth of his
son, he walked with God -- AFTER
he begat Methuselah. It
is implied that at 65 years of age, something happened to him. At sixty-five,
he met God, because until you meet God, you cannot walk
with God. So the first thing -- he had to meet God. Compare this with what happened to Saul (Acts
9: 1-6)
2. Walking With God Implies: Going
In The
Same Direction
You can’t walk
with somebody, if you don’t go in the same direction with them. And the Bible says you cannot serve God and mammon. Enoch was not
serving mammon, he was going the same direction with God.
Matthew 6: 24
(24) No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate
the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the
other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
3. Walking With God Implies: Agreement Of Direction
Amos asked the
question:
Amos 3: 3
(3) Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
And so, Enoch agreed with God, and he is walking in the same direction.
4. Walking With God Implies: Fellowship
Luke 24: 15
(15) And it came to pass, that, while they communed
together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went
with them.
Walking with
implies: fellowship along the way. It is more than merely going in the same direction. Ten people can be walking down a street, but you are
not walking with all of them. They are just going in the same direction. You may only be walking with one, communing and having great fellowship together. Enoch
had fellowship along the way.
5. Walking With God Implies: Separation
There were things
Enoch would not do.
Romans 12: 2
(2) And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12 tells
us: Be not conformed to this world. Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. And there
are things WE will not do,
if we walk with God.
2 Corinthians 6: 14
(14) Be ye not
unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath
righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with
darkness?
Ephesians 5: 11
(11) And have no fellowship with
the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
6. Walking With God Implies: Progress
Isaiah 40: 31
(31) But they that wait upon the Lord shall
renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run,
and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Don’t walk ahead of God, but wait on Him,
for His direction and timing.
7. Walking With God Implies: Holiness
When we walk
with God, He changes us.
1 Peter 1: 15
(15) But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye
holy in all manner of conversation;
2 Corinthians 3: 18
(18) But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the
glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to
glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
8. Walking With God Implies: Happiness
Psalm 1: 1-2
(1) Blessed is the man that walketh not in the
counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth
in the seat of the scornful.
(2) But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in
his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psalm 32: 1
(1) Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose
sin is covered.
Romans 4: 8
(8) Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute
sin.
The man living
in sin, does not remain happy for long. Sin has its
pleasures, but only for a season.
9. Walking With God Implies: Safety
Psalm 23: 4
(4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and
thy staff they comfort me.
Matthew 6: 34
(34) Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for
the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day
is the evil thereof.
10. Walking With God Implies: A Profitable Life
Luke 9: 23-26
(23) And he said (Jesus said) to them
all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross
daily, and follow me.
(24) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but
whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the
same shall save it.
(25) For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole
world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
(26) For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words,
of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory,
and in his Father’s and of the holy angels.
Mark 8: 36
(36) For what shall it profit a man,
if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his
own soul?
11. In The New Testament,
“Walk” Is The Word Used For “Spirituality”
Galatians 5: 16
(16) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye
shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Ephesians 4: 1
(1) I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that
ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are
called,
Ephesians 5: 2, 8, 15 etc.
(2) And walk in love, as
Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a
sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
(8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in
the Lord: walk as children of light:
(15) See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as
fools, but as wise,
Romans 8: 4
(4) That the righteousness of the
law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit.
4. Enoch Walked With God For 300
Years
Genesis 5: 22 He raised a family.
(22) And Enoch walked with God after he begat
Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
Genesis 5: 27 His son lived longer than any other man.
(27) And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty
and nine years: and he died,
Ephesians 6: 1-4 Enoch must have trained his family well.
(1) Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is
right.
(2) Honour thy father and mother, which is the first
commandment with promise:
(3) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long
on the earth.
(4) And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but
bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
5. Gen. 5:24 – God Took Enoch
What a blessing
to be in touch, and in tune with God, and to walk into the Presence of God.
Genesis 5: 24
(24) And Enoch walked with God: and
he was not; for God took him
Returning to: The Family Of Adam
Genesis, Chapters Four And Five
We return to
the subject of “The Family Of Adam.”
We have
considered:
1. The
family created
2. The
family fallen
3. The
family divided
4. Genesis Four – The Sons Of Adam
1. Cain
Genesis 4: 16
(16) And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and
dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
Here is a study of its own:
In
chapter four you have an Enoch – Unrighteous Line
and in
chapter five you have an Enoch – Righteous Line
In
chapter four you have a Lamech – Unrighteous Line
and
chapter five you have a Lamech – Righteous Line
In
chapter four you have a Methusael – Unrighteous Line
In
chapter six you have a Methuselah – Righteous Line
In the one you have those of the fallen seed, and in the other, the ones of faith.
The Beginning Of The Unrighteous Line
Genesis 4: 17
(17) And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived and bare Enoch and he
builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son,
Enoch.
Genesis 4: 18-25
(18) And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael:
and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
(19) And Lamech took unto him two wives:
That’s the first mention of that kind of thing in human history.
the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other
Zillah.
(20) And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell
in tents, and of such as have cattle.
(21) And his brother’s name was Jubal:
All these come
out of Cain.
he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
A way back in
the book of Genesis, they have the harp and organ. We have the idea that men
only invented those things recently.
(22) And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructor of
every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
(23) And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear
my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to
my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
He was not concerned about the one he had slain.
He was only concerned about
himself.
(24) If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech
seventy and sevenfold.
(25) And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and
called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead
of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Hebrews 10: 9
(9) Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He
taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Genesis 4:1-2
(regarding
Abel) I suggest something here. I’m not too positive about it, but I wonder as
we read it:
(1) And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
(2) And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a
keeper of sheep, but Cain was
a tiller of the ground.
What I want you to notice is that she conceived once, and she bore twice.
She conceived in verse one and bare Cain.
Cain was her firstborn. And then she bare again, his brother Abel.
And I suggest to you, that Cain and Abel were twins.
They couldn’t be any closer than that. And it seems to me that that is there. But I won’t lose fellowship with anybody
over that.
Notice, Cain
was a man of the field.
Matthew 13: 38
(38) The field is the world; the good seed are the
children of the kingdom, but
the tares are the children of the wicked one;
Genesis 4: 3-5
(3) And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain
brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
(4) And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock
and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to
his offering:
(5) But unto Cain and to
his offering he had not respect. And
Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Cain was
ill-tempered. Cain was a man of the world. He was a man of the flesh.
Galatians 5: 19-21
(19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
(20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath,
strife, seditions, heresies,
(21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:
of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they
which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Genesis 4: 6
(6) And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? And why
is thy countenance fallen?
(7) If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? And if
thou doest not well, sin lieth
at the door. And unto thee shall be his
desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
(8) And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to
pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother,
and slew him.
Here we see
that Cain was a murderer. He was a man of the Devil.
1 John 3: 12
(12) Not as Cain, who
was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And
wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his
brother’s righteous.
Genesis 4: 9-15
(9) And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother?
And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
(10) And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s
blood crieth unto me from the ground.
(11) And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath
opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
(12) When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth
yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a
vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
(13) And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater
than I can bear.
(14) Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face
of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a
vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth
me shall slay me.
(15) And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth
Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon
Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
Cain was a marked man. God would deal with him. Human government was not
yet established to expedite punishment.
Genesis 4: 16
(16) And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and
dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
“NOD” means
“Wandering.” All who go away from God become wanderers.
Jude 13
(13) Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame;
wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
Genesis 4: 17-24, Cain’s family is listed. I want you to
notice that many were great
in the eyes of the WORLD.
2. Abel
As previously
mentioned, Abel was the twin of Cain.
Genesis 4: 2
(2) And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a
keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Abel was a
keeper of sheep. He was a righteous man.
Genesis 46: 34
(34) That ye shall say, Thy servants’ trade hath been about cattle
from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell
in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
Abel was a pilgrim – not of this world!
Genesis 4: 4
(4) And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock
and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to
his offering:
This was an
offering of faith.
Hebrews 11: 4
(4) By faith Abel offered unto God a more
excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained
witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and
by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Genesis 4: 8
(8) And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to
pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother,
and slew him.
Abel was
murdered because of his faith.
3. Seth
The Beginning Of The Righteous Line
Genesis 4: 25-26
(25) And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and
called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another
seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
(26) And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he
called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
Seth was
