Genesis to Esther Series –
LESSON 14
Genesis Chapters 9 to 11
1. Genesis Chapter 9
In the previous
lessons, looking at Genesis, chapters one to eight, we have actually been
pointing out the Sovereignty of God. There is a Sovereign God who
created Heaven and earth. And man had no voice or choice in that. God did it. And then as you go on, it was a Sovereign God who created the first man and the first woman, and placed them in the garden of
Eden. Man is not on earth because of man’s doing, or man’s
choice. Man is on earth because of God’s
plan.
And then a
Sovereign God allowed man and his wife to fall into sin; and because of sin, God sent a flood on this earth. All of that is in
the first eight chapters. And as we approach the ninth chapter of the book of
Genesis, it is after the flood. And at this time, in the history of the Bible, God institutes human government.
I have been
reading a book that I want to make reference to regarding the Sovereignty of
God. It is called THE MOST
HIGH GOD by Reynold
Showers. I am going to read a little of what he says.
It is because man rejects the rule of
God, his pride drives him to do things opposite to
what God has ordained.
God ordained Capital Punishment for
murderers, but man tries to abolish it.
God regards human life as being valuable
because He has created man in his image, but man destroys it by
millions through abortion.
God instituted marriage back
in the first chapters of Genesis and ordained that it be permanent, but
man divorces and suggests that marriage should be abolished.
God demands justice in society with the protection of
the innocent and the punishment of
the criminal, but man pampers the criminal at the expense
of the innocent.
God ordained the family as
the nurturing place of future generations, but man proposes that governments
replace the family.
God declares that the fear of
the Lord is the beginning (the
starting point) of wisdom, but man forbids any
reference to God in the classroom. They won’t even let them pray, let
alone read the Bible.
God instituted moral absolutes to govern man,
but man says that Utopia can come only through the rejection
of those absolutes. God ordained distinctive appearances
and roles for the sexes, but man tries to obliterate those distinctions. God
instituted sex to be used within the bonds of male/female marriage, but man
perverts sex through pornography, fornication, adultery, homosexuality – you
name it!
God made man to have true meaning and purpose of life only
in Him, but man tries to find true meaning in drugs,
in alcohol, the occult, materialism, philosophy, astrology, the cults, fame,
and power.
Man has his false prophets in Christ to encourage him in
his rebellious attempt at self-rule. These deceivers tell man that
he is good, and perfectible by nature. And so, the more man tries to establish
his Utopia through self-rule, the more the situation worsens.
Man pollutes his environment. His world is shaken by wars
and threats of wars. His streets are filled with violence and crime. His
economy becomes uncontrollable, and he is gripped with a constant fear. When
you reject the Sovereignty of God, and the rule of
God, that’s what you get!
I think that
author really put it down right where it is!
1. Genesis 9: 1-6 – Man Given Responsibilities
We are going to
go back again to Genesis, chapter nine, and notice that after the flood, man was given definite responsibilities. And that is where the Sovereignty of God comes into this story.
Genesis 9: 1-6
(1) And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them.
Stop and think
before we read on -- there has been two
occasions, according to the history of the Bible, in which this world has been
inhabited by only saved people.
First - with Adam and Eve who fell, and God saved them. They were the only
people in this world.
Second - after the flood, there were only eight saved people. Now you stop and think; somebody says “If we had
only saved people, wouldn’t we have a wonderful
world!” But you see, the fact is, saved people
do not bear saved
children. All children have to be saved. And so, it doesn’t take very long for
the world to corrupt itself, even though you begin
with saved people.
God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be
fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.
And then God promised:
(2) And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon
every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth
upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they
delivered.
(3) Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you;
even as the green herb have I given you all things.
(4) But flesh with the life thereof,
which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
(5) And surely your blood of your lives will I
require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the
hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I
require the life of man.
(6) Whoso sheddeth
man’s blood by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
There you have
some very definite responsibilities committed to men who had now been given the government of this earth.
2. Genesis 9: 7-17 – God’s Covenant: No More Floods
God makes a
Covenant with man on the earth. You will notice as we look at it, that the
Covenant is with the human
race. There are two
things involved. There will never be another
flood as there was in the days of Noah. God made that statement. This earth is never going to be destroyed in the same way. And the rainbow will be the sign that God has not forgotten the Covenant He has made. As we go through
these studies, we are going to come back to this Covenant again, but let’s look
at it very briefly.
Genesis 9: 7-17
(7) And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring
forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.
(8) And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him,
saying,
(9) And I, behold, I establish my
covenant with you, and with your seed after
you;
(10) And with every living creature that is with you, of the
fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go
out of the ark to every beast of the earth.
(11) And I will establish my covenant with
you;
I want you to
observe that in verse 9 God says It’s MY
Covenant. In verse 11 God says it is MY
Covenant. God is making a Covenant that He is able to keep.
I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all
flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any
more be a flood to destroy the earth.
(12) And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I
make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual
generations:
(13) I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a
token of a covenant between me and the earth.
This Covenant
was made with the men that are on the earth, and with the earth
itself.
(14) And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over
the earth,
In my Bible, I
have underscored those words WHEN
I BRING A CLOUD. In the
context it is talking about literal clouds, but we talk about clouds of
discouragement. We talk about other clouds. Will you remember, when you are
studying, from Genesis, all through the Bible, there has never been a cloud, but the Sovereign God has allowed it. God is the one who takes credit for bringing the clouds.
When I bring a cloud over the earth, that
the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
(15) And I will
remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of
all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
(16) And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will
look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting
covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the
earth.
(17) And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the
covenant, which I have established between me and
all flesh that is upon the earth.
I guess God
wanted us to pay attention to the fact that, in this, He is making a Covenant. Did you see that word over and over again?
God said, when I look at the bow in the cloud, I’m going to remember.
You have all
the answers that men give, as to what causes the rainbow. And
that’s alright. But the thing that blesses my heart is: when I look at a rainbow, God is looking at
it. And how do I know that? He says so. The next time you see a rainbow,
remember what we have read in Genesis – God
sees it, and the rainbow says that God remembers. And don’t ever forget, you always see a rainbow when
the storm is past where you are standing.
I think I
should go ahead again. I think I cannot do this too often. Let’s go to the book of Revelation. Always
join the book of Revelation with the book of Genesis. As you come through the Bible with these
introductory things in Genesis, and then link them elsewhere, then the Bible
becomes a wonderful, beautiful Book.
Revelation 4: 1-3
John is on the
Island of Patmos, and in visions of God, we read:
(1) After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in
heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking
with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will show thee things which must be
hereafter.
(2) And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a
throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
(3) And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a
sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round
about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
I saw a rainbow round
about the throne.
What is the
significance? What did we read from Genesis? God says, when I put the rainbow in the cloud, I’m going to remember. And here, as you get to the book of Revelation, the first thing that John sees is a throne with the rainbow of God’s faithfulness. Can you see that? Every time
you see a rainbow, right down in the heart of hearts, God is faithful. I may not be, but God is. And you
may not be, but God is.
The first thing
you are going to find out when you get home to Heaven is: in everything in your life God was faithful
to you. That is hard to take now, but you will find it to be true. Great is Thy faithfulness, Oh God my Father. And so the rainbow has a lesson to teach
us.
3. Genesis 9: 18-26 – Noah And His Sons
Genesis 9: 18-26,
we are introduced to Noah and his sons. And it tells us, that by these the whole world was overspread.
Genesis 9: 18-21
(18) And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were
Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
(19) These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the
whole earth overspread.
(20) And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a
vineyard:
This was after the flood, but we are not told how long after the
flood.
(21) And he drank of the wine, and was drunken;
If it hasn’t
been brought to your attention, that is the first
mention of drunkenness in the Bible. And first mentions are always important.
And he was uncovered within his tent.
The Word of
God, in its very language, is so very wholesome
that if you don’t stop and look at it, you might miss it. What does that mean? – uncovered
in his tent? It is
telling us, there was immorality connected with the first act of
drunkenness. And it hasn’t changed. There are two things that go together – drunkenness and immorality. And you can’t change the rules that were
made at the beginning.
There is
another thing regarding this: there is no
mention that God reprimands Noah. What I think about that, and I can’t
be positive, but before the flood, man lived for a long time –
almost a thousand years. Before the flood, man didn’t eat meat. That’s
interesting. Before the flood, you don’t read of any storms. Before the flood, apparently there was no
fermentation.
Before the flood, Noah had been drinking wine,
but he never got drunk. And now, after
the flood, everything is changed. Noah goes out, as he had done before, but this time, he can’t control
himself, and because he can’t control himself, he gets drunk, simply because he drank too much. I think you can
see through that. Somebody says “What is wrong with a glass of wine?” I guess
I’d say there is nothing wrong with one.
But the problem is, when a man has one,
he wants more. And I find that most men can’t stop at one. They cannot control it. And Noah could not control
himself.
God said, Noah,
I want you to be the Governor. I want you to handle the Government. And
the first thing you find out about the Government of that day, it wasn’t so good.
The reason the Government wasn’t so good, was because the man who was in the
Government, couldn’t govern himself. And we have the same thing today haven’t we? Men in Government -- and they
are having a mess, and making a mess, because they can’t govern themselves.
There is
another sad thing in this story.
Genesis 9: 22-25
Noah is drunk –
the first drunkard in the Bible. And he is uncovered
in his drunkenness:
(22) And Ham, the father of Canaan,
The very fact
that Canaan’s name is here, proves there is a time element. When they went out of the ark, Noah’s sons had not
yet had children. But now Ham has a child,
and so there is a time element.
Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father,
and told his two brethren without.
Here is where
you ought to use your imagination as you read it.
(23) And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon
both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their
father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s
nakedness.
There are three
sons, and two are acting much differently than the other. Ham went in, saw his
father, and no doubt laughed at his father, and said something like this: “Brothers,
come on in and see the old man. Come on in and see what a fool he is making of
himself. Dad’s drunk in the tent.”
Japheth and his
brother got a blanket, and they held the blanket back on their shoulders. They
didn’t walk into the tent, but Japheth and Shem backed
in with the blanket held behind. And as they backed in to where their father
was, they flipped the blanket over their naked father. The Bible says love
covereth a multitude of sins. Ham didn’t love his father as he should have. But
Japheth and Shem did. And that is why they did what they did, because they respected their father, even though he was drunk. Because they loved their father, they covered
their father’s nakedness. I think I could preach on that for a few minutes.
Too often, we
as believers, are in the business of uncovering
and telling others about the failures and faults of the saints. I’ve got a
letter from brother Smith, written in 1948. He said:
“Up there in Canada, I get letters from the saints telling
me about the failures of the saints, but I never acknowledge such. You don’t
need to hear about the failures of the saints. If you do, cover it
up and start praying for them.”
Well the two
sons loved him, and that is what they did – covered him up. But there is another thing in here that is very, very sobering.
Genesis 9: 24-25
(24) And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger
son had done unto him. (talking
about Ham)
Noah, who at that time, was the only prophet of God on the earth said:
(25) And he said, Cursed be Canaan;
Here is a
principle that I can’t explain. God
doesn’t explain it, but I believe in the Sovereignty of God, and I believe what God does will finally be
proven to be right.
Deuteronomy 5: 9
(9) Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve
them
He is talking
about the children of Israel regarding the idolatry they will face.
For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth
generation of them that hate me
I don’t
understand that, but back in Genesis 9:24 when Noah awoke he did not put the
curse upon Ham. Did you notice that? He did not say “Cursed
thee Ham,” but he said “Cursed be Canaan.” Who was Canaan? Canaan was Ham’s son. Canaan was Noah’s grandson. That’s an
awful principle. It is a horrible principle!
Somebody comes
along and says: “Does it matter how a father lives?” Yes it does! Well why
does it matter? Because how he lives is going to reflect, not primarily on his son, but on his grandson
and his great grandson.
God visits the iniquities of the fathers unto the third and fourth generation.
Now, again, I can’t explain the ways of God, but God says that.
There is only
one thing that gives me a little ray of hope in here, and makes me begin to
rejoice a little bit. I see it both ways. I see God visiting the iniquity of the fathers unto the grandchildren and the great
grandchildren, but I also see that God does something else. When there is a godly father, God will visit the godliness of that father unto the third and fourth generation.
I think of myself in regard to that. My grandpa Pritchard was the most ungodly man that you would ever want to find. God in his
mercy, saved my father. And He saved me. It is only the mercy of God. But I tremble when I think of that
principle. My grandfather’s sins can still be generated in generations to come.
Sometimes, you look at it and you will say: “I don’t understand why that boy
acts that way.” Well, we have a little answer in the Bible. There are some
visitations unto the third and fourth generation – two ways. And I can’t explain it, but it happens. And God says
it is a principle in His Word.
Genesis 9: 25-26
(25) And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants
shall he be unto his brethren.
(26) And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem;
That is an
interesting thing. Out of Shem we shall find, comes Messiah.
2. Genesis, Chapter 10
1. Genesis 10: 1-5 – The Sons Of Japheth
Genesis 10: 1-5
(1) Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem,
Ham, and Japheth and unto them were sons born after the flood.
(2) The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and
Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.
(3) And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and
Togarmah.
(4) And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim,
and Dodanim.
(5) But these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in
their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their
nations.
Those names
will come up when you study Ezekiel and so on. So, this table becomes
interesting, not for our purpose, but for later on.
2. Genesis 10: 6, 21 – The Sons Of Ham
Genesis 10: 6, 21
(6) And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and
Canaan.
(21) Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber,
the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born,
Each section of
the chapter should be considered on its own. We are told about the sons out of
Japheth in the first five verses. Then verse 6 talks about Ham’s sons. Mizraim
is Egypt. And Phut is in North Africa.
But now we come
to Genesis 10:8
Genesis 10: 8-10
(8) And Cush begat Nimrod: he
began to be a mighty one in the earth.
(9) He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is
said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.
(10) And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel
We are going to
see that these chapter divisions don’t help us too much, because when you get
to the eleventh chapter, it tells you about Babel and the tower of Babel, and
it tells you about the origin of Babylon.
You have all
heard of the tower of Babel. What does the word “Babel” mean? -- Confusion.
Where did it come from? It came from this man Nimrod who came out of Ham, out
of the one who had been cursed by the prophet Noah. It is all connected
together.
Regarding this:
I went to Israel the first time, in 1952.
I specifically mentioned that, because I brought back a book with me in 1952. This
particular edition was published in 1951. The first edition of this book,
appeared in 1890. In other words, it is 95 years old. I had
this book and read it in 1952. It has to do with the story of a place called Baal-bek. You have all heard of the worship of Baal. Baal was
the sun god. All of it is connected with your Bible.
I have pictures
of this temple at Baal-bek, in which they have stones for the foundation of the
old temple that are 69 feet long, and 16 feet high, and 12 feet thick. Those
stones are so perfectly put together, that I could not wedge the
point of my pen in-between them. The seams are perfect
to this day. A farmer from Saskatchewan, standing back and looking, said, “We
haven’t got machinery to do now what they did then.”
I want to read
what this book said. Tradition, (mythology,
they call it) considers Baal-bek as one of the most ancient cities of the world. Some of the Arab religions tell
us that Cain built it. I only know that Genesis tells
me that Cain went out and built a city. But here is what I want you to listen
too:
Nimrod, because he got angry, devised the plan of scaling
the Heavens in a car drawn by four strong birds.
Please remember
that this book was printed before 1957. Why do I say that? 1957 is when they
put Sputnik up in space. It was the first space object sent out in our
generation by men. And so, it wasn’t what they
were doing that brought this about.
Nimrod devised this plan of scaling the Heavens. His last
attempt was still less successful. (They didn’t think of space just twenty years ago) The
car, after wandering in space for a long time, crashed on Mount Herman, where the
body of the Monarch horribly mutilated was found and buried.
It is all supposedly
mythology. The thing that it suggests, that I find
so interesting, is that Nimrod was a space traveler. When it says he was a mighty hunter, that doesn’t
mean he took his arrows and bows and went out to shoot some deer. You can be
sure of that! He was a mighty tyrant before the Lord.
Now, from this
centre of Baal-bek, from Ham came Nimrod the builder of Babel. From Babel comes
the word “Babylon,” a word that, we shall see, appears throughout all the
Bible.
I took a little
time to write out a few notes:
This historical
first reference to Babel, the Tower of Babel from which came the kingdom of
Babylon, is of great interest and importance because of Zechariah 5, and
Revelation chapters 17 and 18. Zechariah
talks about the land of Shinar, and in the book of Revelation, it talks
about the land of Shinar.
3. Genesis 10: 21-32 – The Sons Of Shem
Genesis 10:
21-32 we have a record of the sons of Shem. In the next chapter we will be
given more details connecting Shem with Abraham. Note verse 25. At this time
the earth was divided.
Genesis 10: 25
(25) And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was
Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and
his brother’s name was Joktan.
3. Genesis, Chapter 11
Genesis, chapter nine simply tells us
that Noah had three sons, (Genesis 9: 19) Chapter ten gives us details. Genesis 10:10
introduces Babel and chapter eleven gives us details.
1. Genesis 11: 1-9 – Details Of The Tower Of Babel
In chapter 10,
we are introduced to the Tower of Babel, and we are introduced to Nimrod, the
builder of Babel, and now in chapter 11, it is picking up details of chapter ten.
Genesis 11: 1-2
(1) And the whole earth was of one
language, and of one speech.
(2) And it came to
pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and
they dwelt there.
It is in the
land of Shinar that they built the Tower of Babel. Did you get the connection? You go to Zechariah 5,
and it talks about wickedness going out from the earth from the land of Shinar. And then, in Revelation, chapters 17 and 18, Mystery Babylon.
The reference
to Mystery Babylon (Revelation, chapters 17 and 18) has
reference no doubt, to a confused system of economic, political, and
religious belief. Did you get the combination? – economic, political, and
religious belief, which will be established as the tribulation’s society, and controlled by Satan. It is going to come. The reason it is called “Mystery
Babylon” is that the name “Babylon” has been equated throughout the Word of
God, with spiritual apostasy.
You are going
to find me using that word “apostasy” over and over again. Where does the apostasy that is in the world today, have its route in the
Bible? It goes back to Babel
and Babylon. Babel is
the beginning of apostate religion. It was at Babel that
the molding together of religion, politics, and economics first began. And it
is getting a revival today. It took organization, it took finances, and it took
spiritual apostasy to design such a program which basically was organized religion against God’s authority. Did you get that? God was in control, but men were
rising up.
The name Babylon has become synonymous with mystic religions. Ancient accounts indicate that it was the wife of Nimrod who founded Babel. The wife of this man! She
was known by the name Saramayous, and is also known in history by Aphrodite. Did
you ever hear of the goddess Venus? Did you ever hear of Astrolet? Have you
ever heard of Diana – great is Diana of the Ephesians? Have you ever heard of
Vesta and the Vestal virgins? Have you heard of Moleitta? -- Moleitta was one of the names that was given
to these goddesses that came from the wife of Nimrod. They have all been found
some place in history.
Now please,
don’t take that wrongly, but isn’t it interesting how some of these names originate! When you start reading history, (where they come
from) they didn’t come out of the Bible,
they came out of apostate
religion.
History
records, and it is in the Bible, she gave birth to a son whom she claimed,
(this is not in the Bible) was conceived miraculously, and was given the name
Tammuz. Let’s turn to Ezekiel. I think I better show you one or two things, or
you will think I am a way off base here.
Ezekiel 8: 14, 16
(14) Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the
Lord’s house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping
for Tammuz.
There is the
grandson of Nimrod. The children of Israel were worshipping
the son of this woman that we read about. And what went with it?
(16) And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord’s
house, and behold, at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and
the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple
of the Lord, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward
the east.
That was right
at the temple of Jerusalem, in the days of Ezekiel. They had
introduced Nimrod worship. Are you getting it? And what was it? It
comes from Baal, and Baal-bek and Babylon – sun worship.
They are worshipping the sun, and they are worshipping the son of the sun.
Now, back to my
reading: It is always connected, as you can see, with sun worship – the worship of Baal. The Queen of Heaven is
mentioned in Jeremiah 44. (17, 18, 25) – three times. Now, the significance regarding the Queen of Heaven: This woman gave birth
to a son, whom she conceived miraculously. The son’s name was Tammuz and idols
picture the mother as the Queen
of Heaven, with the babe in her arms. And so, what have we got in religion today? – The Madonna and the child. It has been transferred to Christianity!
But where does it go back to? – to old Babylon.
And out of Babylon the mother and the son. She holds her baby and she calls
herself the Queen of Heaven.
This son was
said to have been killed by a wild beast and came back to life again. You can
see, it was a false Messiah. And being a false Messiah worship. The religious rites of Babylon usually
had a priestly order, which furthered the worship of the mother
and the child. They were worshipping the mother and the child that you read
about. They practiced sprinkling of Holy water. Isn’t that interesting! That
goes a way back to Genesis 10. And established the order of the virgins
dedicated to religious prostitution. Where did all of this come? – way back out
of Babylon.
In our Western world, where in religious circles today
everything goes, we are fast returning to Babylonism. The fact that in some
religious circles, abortion is right, homosexuality is right, living together
outside of marriage is right, devilish music is right, one can see that it will
be a small step before religion reintroduces prostitution
that will be called “sacred
prostitution” – only this time, it will be in the name of Christianity. It has a sad
history doesn’t it! And the thing is being revived right now in 1985.
The Result Of The Tower Of Babel.
Genesis 11: 3-9
(3) And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick,
and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for
mortar.
(4) And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a
tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be
scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
(5) And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower,
which the children of men builded.
(6) And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they
have all one language; and this they begin to
do: and now nothing will be restrained from them,
which they have imagined to do.
(7) Go to, let us go down, and there confound
their language, that they may not understand one another’s
speech.
(8) So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the
face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
(9) Therefore is the name of it called Babel;
because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from
