I..Two Old Testament Inspired Mentors

Moses:

Exodus 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother

Forty years between these two verses

Deuteronomy 5:16 honour thy father and thy mother

Solomon

Proverbs 1:8 forsake not the law of thy mother

Proverbs 6:20 …forsake not the law of thy mother

Proverbs 10:1 a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother

Proverbs 15:20 a foolish man despiseth his mother

Proverbs 19:26 he that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach

Proverbs 20:20 whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out

Proverbs 23: 22 …despise not thy mother when she is old

II Some New Testament Godly mothers

Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist

Luke 1:5-6 both Elizabeth and Zacharias were walking with God

Luke 1:7 both were now well stricken in years

Luke 1:13 had prayed for a son, no promised a son

Luke 1:15 that son would be great in the eyes of the Lord

Mary the mother of Jesus

Luke 1:28 blessed among women

Luke 1:46-47 she rejoiced in God “my Saviour”.

Luke 2:34-35 a sword would pierce Mary’s heart

John 19:25 there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother

The mother of James and John

Mark 10:35 John and James had made a request

The mother in Canaan

Matthew 15:22 her daughter was vexed with a devil

Matthew 15:25 her prayer, ‘Lord help me”

Matthew 15:26-28 ‘truth Lord’ she was willing to take the place of a dog!

The grandmother, and mother of Timothy

2 Timothy 1:5 both known for their faith

2 Timothy 3:14,15 they taught Timothy the Scriptures

III Conclusion

Our responsibility is to honour our mothers

Mother’s responsibility is to pray for and teach their children, the scriptures.
