Resurrection Records in the Gospels

Matthew 28:1-20

We will, in this lesson, follow Matthew’s record, then compare the other writers.

 

I  The Time of the Resurrection

            Matthew 28:1 the end of the Sabbath—dawn of the first day of the week

            Mark 16:1  when the Sabbath was past

            Luke 24:1  upon the first day of the week very early..

            John 20:1  The first day of the week

            It did not take place on the Sabbath day- last day of the week-our Saturday

 cf Colossians 2:16

            It took place early on the first day of the week- our Sunday

            Why does the First day of the week replace the Last day for us?     

                        Without the resurrection there is no gospel to preach

                        Without the resurrection there is no value in preaching

                        Without the resurrection there is no faith to preach

 

II  The women at the tomb.  Where were the men?   John 20:19

            Mathew 28:1 came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary

            Mark: 16:1 (3 women) Mary Magdalene,Mary (the mother of James,)& Salome

            Luke 24: 1 they came.  Cf Luke 23:52-56 cf Luke 8:2-3 Mary Magdalene was one

            John 20:1  cometh Mary Magdalene, when it was dark   cf Mark 16:9

            The Holy Spirit wanted it known that Mary  Magdalene was there first.

            What brought these women?  One thing-  love for the Saviour

 

III. The purpose of the coming of the women

            Matthew 28:1 Mary’s was to see the sepulcher

            Mark 16:1  they brought spices to anoint Him

            Luke 24:1  bringing spices

            John 20:1 Mary of Magdela , sees the stone rolled away

Mary of Bethany was not with those women.

            Luke 10: 39-42  she sat at Jesus feet

John 12: 3,7  she had anointed him for His burial. She knew what the other disciples did not yet know  cf  John20:9

 

IV  The miracle Event

            Matthew 28:2 there was an earthquake,the stone rolled away,an angel appeared

            Mark 16:2-4 who shall roll away the stone? They saw the stone rolled away

            Luke 24:2-4 they found the stone rolled away, no body, and two men appear.

John 20:1-10 Mary finds the stone taken away, but no body. “They have taken away my Lord…”she tells Peter ,

Will graves be opened again? That stone is rolled away by the resurrection!

Will the dead live again?  That stone has been rolled away by the resurrection!

 

V  The Message of the Angels who appeared as “young men”

            Matthew 28:5-6  fear not, He is not here, He is risen.

            Mark 16:6       He is risen , He is not here

            Luke 24:5,6     why seek the living among the dead?, He is not here, but is risen

            John 20:4-10   Peter and John enter the tomb, see and believe, then went home!

 

VI  The Women to take a Message to the Men

            Matthew 28: 7-8  He goeth before you into Galilee, there you shall see Him

            Mark 16:7-8        but go your way, tell his disciples and Peter, go to Galilee

            Luke  24: 9-11    they told all these things unto the eleven, who believed not         

            John 20:11-18    the Personal appearance to Mary Magdalene

            Matthew 28:11-15  the soldiers were taught a wrong message

 

VII  The first recorded words of the resurrected Lord

            Matthew 28:9  All hail – literally O joy

            Mark  there are no words recorded

            Luke 24:17 ,25  these words later ,still resurrection day

            John 20:16  Mary!   cf Mark 16:9

 

VIII The Great Commission

            Matthew 28:16-20   on resurrection day in Galilee

            Mark 16:9-19   given on ascension day

            Luke 24:50-53  ascension day

            John 20:24-29  from resurrection day ‘till eight days after.

 

IX  Conclusion

 

            John 21: 21-23  follow me   ‘til I come.
