Lesson 2

Text  Romans 5:14  Adam a figure - continued.

I  Adam the first, gave me my old nature.

Adam the last, gave me my new nature

“The Scriptures teach that every regenerate being is the possessor of two natures: one, received by natural birth, which is wholly and hopelessly bad, and a new nature, received through the new birth, which is the nature of God Himself, and therefore wholly good”

C.I. Scofield

II  The old Nature

Psalm 14:2,3  this is what the Lord sees!

                        All gone astray

All become filthy   cf Revelation 22:11

                        None doeth good

Romans 3:10-12- repeats what is in the Psalm

The word “unprofitable” , “rotten fruit” writes Newell

Most people do not believe this.

All past and present ‘social gospel’preachers, do not , and cannot believe this.  Only those who do believe this, realize that reformation without

regeneration, will not and cannot, help this condition

Jeremiah 17:9  ‘ the heart is desperately wicked

Romans 8:7-8  the carnal mind is enmity against God. That word means

ill - will, wishing ill , feelings of an enemy

Therefore, cannot obey God,

Cannot please God

and cannot understand God

Romans 1:30  the natural man hates God

Ephesians 4:22  this is called the “old man”

Colossians 3:9  the “old man”

If we have read the Bible correctly, the Bible has nothing good to say about the old nature.  Quote D.G. Barnhouse

2 Chronicles 18:6-7  illustrates.

See why Ahab hated God’s prophet?  For the same reason, men hate the Bible. Men do not like being told that they are sinners and sinful.

Only by accepting what the Bible says about fallen human nature, can the conduct of people , of every generation, be understood.  Men sin because they are sinners, not because they are sick!

If it were not for the striving of the Spirit  Genesis 6:3, and the restraining of the Spirit. Psalm 76:10, 2 Thessalonians 2:7.men would be manifestly more wicked.

The old nature may become religious but it will always remain godless.

Romans 6:6  it was crucified with Christ

III  The New nature

2 Corinthians 4:7  a treasure in an earthen vessel

Romans 8:9  it is the Spirit of Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17  it is a new creature

Ephesians 2:15  it is a new man

            Ephesians 4:24   a new man

Colossians 1:27  it is Christ within

Colossians 3:10  it is the new man

2 Peter 1:4   it is the Divine nature

1 John 5:10  it gives witness within

I John 3:9   this nature does not sin

Galatians 2:20   Christ liveth in me

“Once far from God and dead in sin,

No light my heart could see

But in God’s Word the light I found,

            Now Christ liveth in me.

            Christ liveth in me.

Christ liveth in me

            Oh! What a salvation this,

That Christ liveth in me”

The conflict between the old and new nature is described in Romans chapter seven
