Lesson X

Interpretation – IV

June 7, 2009

We have been sharing our personal experience as to how and why we interpret the Bible as we do.

Review

I.  I have learned that Bible history is linked history.  We illustrate what we mean.

a.       Genesis 5: 6  Enoch , then named in Jude 14 Enoch

b.      Exodus 16:15 Israel ate manna , John 6:31  our fathers did eat manna

c.       Leviticus 4:3 bulls Leviticus 3:12 goats  Hebrews 10:4 did not remove sin

d.      Numbers 21:9  serpent on a pole.  John 3:14 as Moses lifted up

e.       Deuteronomy 8:3 is quoted by Jesus in Matthew 4:4

f.

II  I have learned that Bible history is literal history

a Genesis 1:19 The first man was Adam cf 1 Corinthians 15:45 The last Adam. For the last Adam to be literal the first Adam must be literal also

.

III  I have learned that Bible history is about life- as is no other book

IV  I have learned that Bible history is also linked with geography

Acts 27  the story begins with Italy

V  I have learned that Bible history, and geography, are linked with Bible prophecy.

Luke 24:50-51 Acts 1:9-11

VI  I have learned that much Bible history is actually fulfilled Bible prophecy

Examples  Matthew3:1-3 is history but actually fulfilled prophecy- Isaiah 40:3

Matthew 2:1 now history, actual fulfillment of prophecy in Micah 5:2

VII  I have learned that much Bible prophecy that has become history, then, that history becomes typical prophecy.

Example

Jeremiah 25:12  prophecy of the Babylonian captivity

Jeremiah 29:10  prophecy of the Jewish return from Babylon

Daniel 9:25-26   prophecy of the rebuilding of Jerusalem

All these prophecies became history as recorded in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah

That history, because it is fulfilled prophecy, becomes typical prophecy

Isaiah 11:11-12  return, not from Babylon, but the four corners of the earth

Amos 9:13-15   they will build again in Israel

Example

Jeremiah 25:11 and Isaiah 39:6,7  prophecies of the Babylonian captivity

            Daniel:1-6  history fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy

`           Daniel 3:1  history of Nebuchadnezzar’s image

Revelation 13:11-17  that history being fulfilled prophecy, points forward to a much greater event

Example

2 Samuel 7:12  prophecy that David will have a seed

2 Chronicles 6:10 that prophecy became history when Solomon sat on David’s throne

2 Chronicles 29:23 that throne is also the throne of the Lord, therefore, Solomon becomes a type. The real Seed is greater than Solomon.

Luke 1:31-33 the Old Testament story is a type of New Testament prophecy

Acts 2:21  a prophecy that will surely become history.

Conclude

The Jewish people who did return to their land will return again.

The Jewish people who did re-build their land and city will do so again.

Seeing these facts brings us to the conclusion that Bible prophecy is actually pre-written history.

These things have an important bearing on how we interpret the Bible.
