Christ the King

I           Matthew 1:1  Jesus Christ- son of David

    1. Matthew1:6   David the King  . In the chapter from Solomon to Jechonias

all are kings in the Old Testament, but the Holy Spirit names only David as King here.

    1. Jeremiah 22:24-30  “Coniah” is the same person named “Jechonias”
    2. Jeremiah 22:30  no son of his “would prosper sitting on the throne of David”.  Therefore, the husband of Mary, Joseph, though of the lineage of David (Luke 2:4),could ever have seed that could qualify to sit on David’s throne.  That is the reason only David is named “king”.

Mary the mother of Jesus was of the house of David. Not through Solomon, but through Nathan, David’s son. ( Luke 3:31)

An important lesson: if Joseph were the father of Jesus, Jesus could not be the promised King.  This genealogy proves that Joseph was not the father of Jesus after the flesh.

II         The genealogy in Matthew one, is that of Joseph, Mary’s husband.

Matthew 1:16  notice the word “begat”

Luke 3:23  must be the genealogy of Mary, for the verse does not say Heli begat Joseph.   He must have been Joseph’s father-in-law.  It was Mary and not

Joseph who gave Jesus his connection, in the flesh, with King David.

Ezekiel 21:25-27  Zedekiah is the wicked prince ( Jeremiah 52:1-2)  His throne to be overthrown until “he come whose right it is”

Psalm 2:6  I will set my King…So again, we see the reason no other is named “king” in Matthew, because the title only belongs to Jesus Christ.

III        When Jesus was on earth, to acknowledge Him as “son of David” was to manifest a  faith that He was “king of the Jews” and “King of Israel”

Matthew 9:27-29      thou son of David

Matthew 12: 22-23   thou son of David

Matthew 15:21-28    thou son of David.  She was a gentile and He did not respond. But when she simply, said “lord” he answered  cf  Romans 15:9 Psalm 136

Matthew 20:30-34    son of David

Matthew 21:1-9        son of David

Mathew 21:15-17     son of David

We cannot consider “David the King” apart from the subject of the Kingdom

Because there is much in Matthew about “the King” there is also much about the subject of the Kingdom.  The question being:  What Kingdom is it teaching us about?  Is there a connection with the Old Testament, or just the New?
