Death

Lesson VI

October 26, 2008

Before we outline our Chart notes on the doctrine of resurrection, it is in order, and needful, that we consider the facts regarding death. For without death there would be no need of resurrection.

I  There are three major aspects of death in Scripture.

            Spiritual death

            Physical death

Second Death

All are some form of separation.

II  Spiritual Death

Genesis 2:17 the day you eat ye shall surely die

Genesis 5:5   yet Adam went on living for 939 years.  So the death on that day

            must have been spiritual.

Genesis 3:8  the day they ate, they hid from God, for their sin brought separation

from God.  That is spiritual death

            Ephesians 4:18  describes spiritual death

Ephesians 2:1 ; Ephesians 2:5; Colossians 2:13 all speak of this death

III  Physical death

1 Thessalonians 5:23  a human is made ‘spirit, soul and body’

Luke 1:46-47       my soul and my spirit

            Hebrews 4:12      soul and spirit

Acts 7:54-59        Lord Jesus, receive my spirit

Genesis 35:18     her soul was in departing

James 2:26          the body without the spirit is dead

Matthew 10:28    killing the body does not kill the soul

Therefore, physical death is the separation of the soul and spirit from the body.

So we conclude that only the body is placed in the grave.

IV  Where do the Spirit and Soul go at the time of physical death?

            Before the resurrection of Christ

‘Sheol’ is the Hebrew word in the Old Testament

‘Hades’ is the Greek word in the New Testament.

Both are translated “Hell” in the K.J.V.

Both mean “the place of departed spirits”

When Christ died, He went down into Paradise.

Luke 23:39-36 today, with me in paradise

Psalm 16:9-10  the prophecy

Acts 2:22-31     the New Testament commentary on the Psalm

V  In Luke 16, Jesus reveals some facts about Hades

Luke 16:19-31 Hades has two parts with a gulf between

One part or room for the lost –torments in Hell

The other for the saved, comfort, paradise

Matthew 16:17-18  This place has gates- plural

VI  When Jesus died, He went to Paradise in Hades

Ephesians 4:8-9 descended into the lower parts of the earth

Matthew 12:39-40  in the heart of the earth

VII  Old Testament saints did not go to Heaven

Hebrews 10:4  sacrifices did not take away sins

1 Samuel 28:3,11  Samuel came up, not down

Luke 9:30-31   What did Moses and Elijah talk about?

VIII  Christ, by death and resurrection, moved Paradise

2 Corinthians 12:1-4  this also explains Ephesians 4:8

IX  Now, when believer’s die they go to Heaven

2 Corinthians 5:8   home with the Lord

Philippians 1:21, 23  to depart is to be with Christ

            1 Thessalonians 4:14  with Him

X  Before the resurrection, the Devil had the power of death

            Hebrews 2:14

XI  Now Christ holds the keys of death

Revelation 1:18   I have the keys

Romans 14:9    both life and death

XII  Hell will be moved

Rev. 20:14   this is the Second or eternal death
