II In
this lesson, we consider Chapter 1:1-7
Daniel 1:1 teaches the following:
1.
It was the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah
a.
Unger’s Dictionary “Jehoiakim became King in 608 B.C”
His
third year would be between 606-605 BC
b.
Jehoiakim was the 18th King of the Kingdom
of Judah
c.
2 Chronicles 36:4 Eliakim was his original name, but the
King
of Egypt changed
his name to Jehoiakim
d.
Jeremiah 36:22-25 Jehoiakim was very wicked and irreligious
2.
It was at this time Nebuchadnezzar, King
of Babylon,made his first
invasion of
Jerusalem
Isaiah
39:5-7 an event foretold by Isaiah
Jeremiah 25:11-12 also
foretold by Jeremiah
3 Thus,
the book of Daniel opens with an example of prophecy becoming history.
4
The rise of Babylon against Israel was the beginning of the “times of the
Gentiles”. Iraq occupies the territory of Babylon today
Daniel 1:2
1 The Lord gave Jehoiakim
into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar
John 19:10-11 This is
always true
2 The Lord allowed Nebuchadnessar
to take some of the holy
vessels of the temple
of Jerusalem to Babylon
Daniel 5:2 - history built on history
3
The King took these vessels to the temple
of his god in the land of
Shinar
Genesis
10:10 the beginning of
Babylon was at Shinar
Genesis 11:1-2 the
builders of the Tower journey to Shinar
Isaiah 11:11 Zechariah 5:11 these are prophecy
of Shinar
Shinar was part of Babylon, between Tigris and
Euphrates rivers
The river Euphrates ran under the walls of
the city of Babylon
Daniel 1:3-4 The King
of Babylon commanded Ashpenaz to bring captives from
Jerusalem
1 they were to be princes of Judah, seed of the King
of Judah
2 he was to choose the best who had wisdom and science
3 the captives would be taught the learning of the Chaldeans
(the upper class?)
Daniel 1:5
They
would be well nourished for three years before seeing the King of Babylon
Daniel 1:6
Here
we have the Hebrew names of
these captive men
Daniel 1:7
Here
are their Heathen names given
by the King
Strange that we have learned these names best of the three.
Conclude
The
over-all message of the book of Daniel and lesson for us is:
To see the hand of God in everything.
We
shall see two Kings of Babylon learning this lesson.
God
rules over all.
