Daniel Refuses the King’s Wine

Daniel 1:8

Lesson # 3

October 17, 2010

I  Daniel 1:3  Daniel, and his three friends were of the seed of Judah’s King.

They were not his sons. King Jehoiakim had an ungodly home.

These four Hebrew boys were raised in godly homes.

Isaiah 55:8-9  God’s ways are high above our ways.

II  Daniel 1:1,6  Perhaps these four godly Hebrew boys were between 15 to 20 years of age when they were taken captives to Babylon

In verse six they are called “children”

III  Ezekiel became a captive in Babylon about 8 years after Daniel.

Both Ezekiel and Daniel wrote books of prophecy, not only regarding Israel, but also regarding the Gentile Nations, that then, and now, have and are a trouble to the Jewish Nation.  Jews are still news!

Numbers 24:8,9

IV  Daniel 1:4  these Hebrew-Jewish boys were to be educated in Babylon. Learn the language and customs of this strange land, and be conformed to it.

They faced the same kind of pressure Christian young people face today, to become like the world.

Romans 12:1-2  is for us

John 15:19,20   is also for our learning.

V  Daniel 1:5  The Gentile, Heathen king Nebuchadnezzar, appointed a daily portion of the kings meat and wine for these Hebrew boys.

Daniel 1:8, Daniel named this portion to be “defilement” for him, and purposed in his heart not to take the meat or the wine

Numbers 6:1-4  A Nazarite could not have wine

Luke 1:13-15    John, to be great, was not to drink wine

Proverbs 20:1   wine is a mocker

The Prophets are filled with warnings against this evil

Galatians 6:7  to drink wine is to be sowing to the lusts of the flesh

1 Timothy 5:23   wine may be used as a medicine

VI  Daniel 1:9-14  Daniel made a wise request of his master

Verse 12 “pulse to eat”  I understand this word means “vegetables”

Verse 9-  God had brought Daniel into favour with the prince of the

                        eunuchs   (Matthew 18:12)

Although it could have cost him his life (Daniel 1:10 and Daniel 5:18-19)

God had brought Daniel into favour with Melzar, and he granted the request.

VII  Daniel 1:15- 20  see how God rewarded Daniel for his faithful stand

1 Timothy 4:8  godliness is profitable

Joshua 24:15  choose you this day

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 is the best conclusion
