Daniel  chapter 2

 (Part 1)

Lesson #5

January 9, 2011

Introduction

I   Luke 21-24  Jerusalem shall be trodden down of  the Gentile until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Zechariah 12:3  …will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone to all people.

The Book of Daniel presents an over-view of the times of the Gentiles from their beginning, when Nebuchadnezzar came from Babylon and took the Jews as captives; then concludes, with a Great time of trouble, Daniel 12:1, that will see the end of the times of the Gentiles.

II  During the “times of the Gentiles”, the Jews have been and are, under Gentile rulers.

As we shall see in the book of Daniel, under different Gentiles rulers, the Jews have been abused, despised, trodden down under foot, misused, yet in each case, have become prominent, promoted and preserved, as no other people

III  Matthew 24:15  Jesus called Daniel , “the prophet”.  Remember, when Jesus introduced Daniel, that moment, He was taking His Disciples back to Jewish ground.

Because Daniel was a prophet we should not be surprised to find prophecy in his Book, prophecy that pertains primarily to the Jews.

IV  Prophecy, in Daniel, is presented in a three-fold way.

1.   Chapters 1,3,4,5,6 are basically history, therefore the chapters are filled with prophecy in types.

2.   Chapters 2,7,8 are filled with symbols, therefore  we have prophetic symbols.

  1. Chapters 9,10,11,12, we find prophecy by Divine Revelation.  Therefore, they can only be understood when revealed by God

Types. are Divinely purposed illustrations of truth, and can only be understood as they are explained by the Bible

Matthew 12:40 Jonah in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, illustrates the death, burial and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Matthew teaches us so!

Symbols make use of things, other than their ordinary , literal meaning. Symbols must be identified by the Bible as being such. A symbol must symbolize something.

Revelation 1:20   the seven candlesticks (in this context)  symbolize 7 churches

To illustrate Revelation: John 13:37, 38.  Knowing and telling what will take place in the future.   This is prophetic revelation.

However prophecy in Scripture is recorded, type, symbol or revelation, all, when fulfilled, is literally fulfilled. You may illustrate, demonstrate, that fact by the events in the life and ministry of Jesus, when He came to earth the first time.
