I  The Background – before Solomon became King

2 Samuel 3:2-5  David reigned at Hebron, sons born there.

2 Samuel 3:4    the 4th son of David was Adonijah

2 Samuel 5:13-15  here David’s sons and daughters born at Jerusalem are named.

Verse 14 lists Nathan and Solomon as sons.  Their mother, Bathsheba

1 Kings 1:11

1 Kings 1:1     David was old …no heat

cf  verse 15  he was very old

1 Kings 1:5-7   Adonijah made himself King

1 Kings 1:8  Names those who did not support Adonijah, (were faithful to David)

1 Kings 1:9     Adonijah, makes a feast, calls all the sons but not all

1 Kings 1:10  He did not call his brother Solomon, nor Nathan the prophet

1 Kings 1:11  The prophet Nathan tells Bathsheba

1 Kings 1:12-22  Both Bathsheba and Nathan go to see David

1 Kings 1:28-30   David makes Solomon the King  (verses 31-32)

1 Chronicles 23:1    it verifies the Book of Kings

1 Chronicles 28:5   the Lord hath chosen

1 Chronicle 28:10  the Lord hath chosen thee

Compare 1 Chronicles 29:23 with 2 Chronicles 6:10  David’s throne is the Lord’s throne.  See also Luke 1:32 and Acts 2:29-31

II  The Beginning of his Reign - Solomon did well.

2 Chronicles 1:1  the Lord his God was with him

2 Samuel 12:24  The Lord loved him

1 Kings 3:3   Solomon loved the Lord   cf  1 John 4:19

2 Chronicles 1:7-12  Solomon was given a gift of wisdom that no other has had.

            1 Kings 4:29-31   see also 1:Kings 3:5-15  especially verses 9,10

1 Kings 4:32-34  Solomon was also talented

Yet the end of his life was a failure.

The lesson : gifts and talents do not make one spiritual, nor do they keep one     spiritual.

1 Corinthians 1:6-7  The Corinthians came behind in no gift, but they were still Carnal.  1 Corinthians 3:1

Solomon ended his life on earth, a carnal man.
