Why Solomon Failed

Texts  Proverbs 4:23; Proverbs 14:14 ; Colossians 3:23

            backsliding is seldom a blow-out, it is usually a slow leak”

 

I  The first indication that something was wrong in Solomon’s life

 

            1 Kings 3:3  He loved the Lord only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places

            Psalm 12:2  double heart

            1 Kings 17:22,23  feared the Lord and

            Judges 17: 1-3  wholly dedicated to the Lord to make an image

            Ezekiel 8:16   in the temple worshipping the sun

            James 1:8  double minded man

            Matthew 6:24  ye cannot

 

II  Solomon had the Torah and the instructions for Kings

 

            Deuteronomy 17:14-20   The instructions are in two parts, first the negative, then

            the positive.

            The Negatives

1  Deuteronomy 17:16  not to multiply horses from Egypt.  1 Kings 10:28-29

2  Deuteronomy 17:17  not to multiply wives   cf  1 Kings 11:  3

3  Deuteronomy 17:17  not to multiply silver and gold  cf  1 Kings 10:14; 27

The Positives

1        Deuteronomy 17:18  write his own copy of the law, the Torah

2        Deuteronomy 17:19  to read it daily all his life

3        Deuteronomy 17:19  to learn to fear the Lord.  Proverbs 1:17, 9:10

4        Deuteronomy 17:19  to learn to do the will of God ,to keep the law  Psalm 119:11

5        Deuteronomy 17:20  to be kept from pride  cf. Proverbs 6:16,17

6        Deuteronomy 17:20  to keep him in the center of the road

 

III  The Conclusion

 

If the first five books of the Bible would do those things for a  King, what can the whole Bible do for us?  The study of the Word will , if we let it, keep is stable.

            2 Peter 3:16  if unlearned are unstable, learned should be stable!

            Hebrews 13:7-9  what does it mean that Jesus is the same yesterday and today ??
