Lesson XVIII

Rehoboam – II- His Reign

April 1, 2007

I  Rehoboam Reign was influenced more by his mother than his father

1 Kings 14:21  his mother is named

1 Kings 14:31 she is named a second time in the chapter

II  Rehoboam’s Record reveals his mother’s influence

1 Kings 14:21-24  Rehoboam allowed idol worship to continue

1 Kings 11:7  Rehoboam’s mother, being an Ammonite, worshiped Molech

2 Chronicles 12:1  He forsook the law of the Lord

2 Chronicles 12:5  The Lord said: “Ye have forsaken me…”

            2 Chronicles 12:14  Rehoboam did evil because…

III  Rehoboam Revealed his heart by his first major Decision

2 Chronicles 10: 1-8   he forsakes the counsel of the ‘old men’

2 Chronicles 10: 8-14  he followed the counsel of the young men with whom he had been brought up

2 Chronicles 12:9-10  he exchanged ‘gold’ for ‘brass’

IV  The Conclusion,  Outwardly Rehoboam caused the Division of the Kingdom

1 Kings 12:19,20  Israel  (the ten tribes) rebelled and separated from Judah

See also  2 Chronicles 10:19  Israel rebelled against the house of David

2 Chronicles 10:15  for the cause was of God

Such are the ways of God.  He always Has a reason for what He allows men to do

He used the foolishness of Rehoboam to be the basis for the Judgment later, of the wickedness of the Ten Tribes.

Cf  Psalm 76: 10  what He cannot use He does not allow
