David- as a Type I

I  Type One.  David was born in Bethlehem

            a  located about 5 miles south of Jerusalem

            b.  ! Samuel 16:4  Samuel went to Bethlehem to anoint David King

                1 Samuel 17: 58  David the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite

            c.. A brief history of Bethlehem

                Genesis 35:19  Rachel, Jacob’s wife, was buried there

                Ruth 1:22  Ruth came to Bethlehem

                Ruth 2:4,8,  Ruth gleaned in the fields of Boaz at Bethlehem

                1 Chronicles 11:17  it had a special well of water

            d.  Bethlehem means  ‘the house of bread’

                        So it was the place of bread and water, the necessities of life.

e.       Micah 5:2  the prophecy of the birth of Christ at Bethlehem

f.       Matthew 2:1-3  the history of His birth at Bethlehem

g.      John 4:9-15  Jesus claimed to be the water of life.  No water like that water!

h.      John 6: 32-35, 41,48-58  Jesus claimed to be the Bread of life.

So the types are very significant.

 

II.. Type Two: When David appears on the scene, a Usurper is on Israel’s Throne

            Saul did not belong there.  He was the people’s choice of a king

            When Christ appears on the scene, a usurper was claiming their throne.

            Herod, the Edomite, had taken the title “King of the Jews”.

            1 Samuel 19:1  as Saul sought to slay David,

            Matthew 2:13  Herod sought to destroy the child Jesus

 

III Type Three  Silent Years

1 Samuel 16:11-13  the only thing we learn about David from his birth until he  meets Samuel is that he kept his father’s sheep.  When he appears he is anointed by Samuel to be king

Luke 2: 41-52  the years of Jesus from his birth to his baptism are silent, except the one event when he was 12 years of age

Matthew 3:13-17  When He was baptized in water, the Dove came upon him

 

IV  Type Four.  David meets with Goliath

            1 Samuel 17:16  Goliath had defied Israel for 40 days

            1 Samuel 17:32-50  after David had been anointed King, he fights Goliath

            Matthew 4:1-11  after His anointing, Jesus fasted for 40 days, then had conflict

            With the Devil.

            1 Samuel 17:54,57   David, took the head off of Goliath.

            Genesis 3:15  the seed shall bruise the Serpents head

            Colossians 2:15  showed his victory openly.
