Paul’s
Advice to Timothy
Lesson
V
1
Timothy 4:16 - II
July 26, 2009
Review 1 Timothy 3:15 behave thyself
1 Timothy
4:7 exercise thyself
1 Timothy 4:15 give thyself
1 Timothy
4:16 take heed unto thyself
Psalm
119:9 take heed to the Word and you will be “ taking
heed to thyself”
Although this advise
was given to the young preacher, Timothy, we have been applying it to all
believers.
Last week’s lesson summarized:
Watch your doing.
It does matter what you do.
Watch your doctrine. It does matter
what you believe
Watch your devotion. That, too, matters
for a believer
Revelation 2:4 do
not leave your love for Him
John 21:15-17 He
is still asking, do you love me?
Cf 2 Corinthians 5:14
When love is right, the pressure to
please Him will be from within not from without
Text- 1 Timothy 4:16 the last part of the verse:
“Continue in them for in so doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee”
I This text does not
have to do with the salvation of our souls, as some teach.
I quote a commentary on this text “if
you are saved, there must be striving,
watching and praying”
II The salvation of the soul has nothing to do with what we do
Ephesians
2:8-10 you do not work for a gift
2 Corinthians 5:17-18 all
things regarding the New Creation are of God
Acts 16:31 Paul’s
answer to the Jailer’s question still stands
Romans 3:22 when we believe we received
the righteousness of God
Colossians 2:10 what
can be added to that which God says is “complete”?
III Our text has to do with the life that now is, we can “save” or “lose”
it
Proverbs 19:23
the fear of the Lord tendeth to life
Luke 9:23,24 note the word “life”
Acts 2:40
this is saving yourself from
this untoward generation
Philippians 2:12,13 this is the salvation we work out, as God works within
2 Peter 1:1-10 here we learn how to save ourself
Luke 9:25 one may gain the world and
become a castaway
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul said “he kept his body in subjection”.
Romans 8:38-39 Paul
did not fear losing his salvation.
He kept his body in
subjection so that he might save-himself from a fruitless life
IV 1
Corinthians 10:1-10 illustrate what Paul meant by being a castaway
Fulfill
the first part of our text and you will “save thyself” in this life.
