March 28, 2010
Introduction
The book of Joel outlines prophecy
that has to do with
I Joel 1,-2:1-11 Prophecy of the Babylonian
Captivity and troubled land
Jeremiah
25:11 the
captivity was to last for 70 years, said Jeremiah
Jeremiah 28:11 another
prophet said “ 2 years”
Jeremiah 28:15-17 Jeremiah
speaks to this prophet
Jeremiah 29:8-9 let
not your prophets deceived you (named
in verses 21,24)
Jeremiah 29:30-32 to
reject the Word is to rebel against God.
Interpreting prophecy
caused division then, and when Jesus
came, John 8:40-43, and it still causes division to this
day.
Note: this prophecy of
the Babylonian captivity has been fulfilled and is now history, proving Jeremiah
and Joel to be the true prophets (Deuteronomy 18:22)
II Joel 2:12-27 Prophecy of
Joel 2:25 I will restore
Jeremiah 29:10-14 a like promise
Joel 2:12-17 when
Nehemiah 1:3-7 explains Nehemiah’s
prayer
Daniel 9:1-4 explains Daniel’s prayer
Joel 2:18 The Lord will again be
jealous for His land and pity His people
Joel 2:20 The
Lord will remove the Northern Army (
Just
as the captivity was literal, the restoration was literal
Both
become typical of greater judgments and greater restoration to come
III Joel 2:28-29 Here, another
prophetic event.
Joel 2:28 “afterward” After what?
After
God
will pour out His Spirit upon them
Acts 2:16 Peter
connects Pentecost with Joel’s promise.
Peter says. “this is that which was spoken by Joel”. He does not say this is the fulfillment
of Joel’s prophecy.
The day of Pentecost was
a specimen day, it was not a final day
Acts 2:16-21 Peter quotes to the end of the chapter of Joel chapter two
Joel 2:29-32
Events preceding the Second
Coming
( God pouring
out His Spirit on others is another matter)
Joel’s focus is on the
people of
Zechariah 12:10 is not the Spirit of grace, the Holy
Spirit ?
