Introduction
The major message of the book of
Hosea is the love of God
The major message of the
book of Joel is that of the judgments of God
The major message of the
book of Amos is that of the judgment of Israel
We will look at The
Messenger, the man Amos
Then
we will look at the Message of the book of Amos
I The man
Amos
1.
Amos 1:1 The
word “Amos” means “burden” or “burden- bearer”
Luke
3:25 is the only other time his name
appears in Scripture

Amos 1:1 He was
born and raised in Tekoa
The word means “sounding an alarm” cf
Jeremiah 6:1. Tekoa was
located 5 miles south of Bethlehem, ten miles from Jerusalem on a hill 2700 ft
high over-looking the wilderness of Judah.
( 2 Samuel 14:2 tells of a wise woman who lived there)
Tekoa was an obscure place,
unlikely place, to raise a prophet
3..Amos 1:1 Amos was a herdmen This was an
occupation linked to farming. Today
The area is pasture land for sheep
and goats.

Amos 1:1 his
message concerned the Northern kingdom of Israel, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and Jeroboam II king of Israel. Materially prosperous days
