Lesson V

The Value of Truth

January 31, 2010

I  Introduction

Gomer’s unfaithfulness to Hosea, is used to illustrate Israel’s unfaithfulness to her God.

The Bible clearly teaches that the children of Israel are His chosen people

In the book of Hosea there are at least three major subjects

  1. Israel’s continued backslidings and unfaithfulness to God
  2. God’s continued workings with Israel and for Israel during their unfaithfulness
  3. God’s unfailing faithfulness is seen in His patiently restoring the Nation to a full and final place of being a blessing to the Nations of the world

II  Hosea 4:1-16   Israel’s unfaithfulness

       God’s faithfulness never changes

Lamentations 3:22-23  Great is Thy faithfulness

2 Thessalonians 3:3      The Lord is faithful

2 Timothy 3:13     He abideth faithful

            Titus 1:2    God cannot lie

Hosea 4:1.  God has a case against Israel.  Three things are absent

1.      There is no truth (in the land)

2.      There is no mercy (in the land)

3.      There is no knowledge of God in the land

Hosea 4:2 The sins that have taken the place of truth, mercy and knowledge of God are listed

Swearing and lying, killing and stealing, adultery and blood touches blood means, -murder is common.   It sounds like a daily news report in B.C.!

III  John Huss , burned at the stake July 6,1415 , wrote:

            1  Seek the truth

            2  Listen to the truth

            3  Learn the truth

            4  Love  the truth

            5  Speak  the truth

            6  Hold  the truth

7  Defend the truth until death

IV  When truth, faithfulness, and knowledge of God go out, sin rushes in!

John 1:17  grace is linked with truth

            John 8:32   truth makes free

            John 17:17  truth sanctifies

1 Corinthians 5:8  truth is linked with sincerity

Ephesians 4:15  love and truth are linked

2 Timothy 4:4  to turn from truth, turns one to fables
