June 22, 2008

Introduction

First – we look at some facts about a Good Shepherd

Then – we look at David as one of the sheep

“This psalm has charmed more grief’s to rest than all the philosophy of the world.”

I.  A True Shepherd cares for the sheep.

John 10:13  the hireling cares not for the sheep

Psalm 142:4  no man cared for my soul

Mark  4:38    do you not care that we perish?

Luke 10:34-35   take care of him.

1 Peter 5:7  He careth for you.

He knows. He loves. He cares. Nothing this truth can dim…

II   A True Shepherd knows the sheep by name

John 10:3  calleth his own sheep by name.

     Psalm 147:4  all by name

     Isaiah 40:26   all by name

III  There are at least three kinds of sheep

There are sheep that stay- close to the Shepherd  because they came to know Him

There are sheep that are satisfied and just find it normal to follow the Shepherd

There are sheep that are prone to stray and need special care

IV  David, one of God’s sheep, had his stressful days

Psalm 23:2  he speaks of green pastures and still waters, implying that he knew days of lean pastures and troubled  waters. Do we not have such days?

Matthew 6:25-34  Jesus knew that His own would have such days

       Philippians 4:5-9  is the remedy

V   David , one of God’s sheep, had his straying days

Psalm 23:3        he restoreth my soul  Only the Lord can do that.

Psalms 119:67  perhaps we are in the greatest danger when things go well

Psalm 119:71    blessed trouble that brings us to Him

Ruth  1:21          we go out, the Lord brings us back

2 Timothy 2:24-25    only God can grant repentance

Remember Israel had to stay in the wilderness for forty years!

Remember Israel had to stay in Babylon for seventy  years!

VI   David, one of God’s  sheep, had his sorrowful days

Psalm 23:4  in the valley of the shadow of death

Song of Solomon  2:1      there,  we find  the lily of the valleys

2 Corinthians 7:5-6         was Paul cast down?

1 Corinthians 16:17-18   did Paul need refreshing?

VII  David, one of God’s sheep, had his serious days

Psalm 23:5      when he ate at the table in the presence of his enemies

1 Samuel 30:6  David could only encourage himself in the Lord

Ephesians 6:12  our enemies are unseen powers of darkness surrounding us

The ‘table’ is the Word,  the ‘oil’ the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 6:17  never forget , the sword of the Spirit is the Word of God

VIII  David, one of God’s sheep, had his sublime days

Psalm 23:5  when his cup was running over

Nehemiah 8:10  His joy is our strength

Philippians 3:1  rejoice in the Lord

Philippians 4:4  rejoice in the Lord always

      1 Thessalonians 5:16 rejoice evermore

IX     David was looking forward to his great satisfying days.

Psalm 23:6   dwell in the house of the Lord forever

John 10:28   His sheep never perish

Romans 8:38-39  do you live  as did Paul?
