Lesson IV

Key verses of Matthew 24

September 6, 2009

Introduction -  When Jesus Christ came to earth the first time:

Matthew2:1       He was born in Bethlehem, in the land of Israel

Matthew 15:24  He said He was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Matthew 4:23    Jesus, in Jewish synagogues, preached the gospel of the kingdom

Matthew 24      was the last sermon Jesus preached to His people, the Jews, before He ascended to Heaven.

I  Matthew 24:29-30 contain the key message of the chapter

            1.  Verse 29  tells us plainly when the event will take place..

2   Verse 30  tells us plainly what that event will be..  “the Son of Man coming in the clouds with power and great glory”

3        Acts 1:9-11 at the Ascension, the fact of His return was declared by Heavenly  Messengers.

4        Zechariah14:4  tells us that Jesus will come back to the Mount of Olives.

5         The reason He is coming back to the same land  is because He is Coming back to fulfill the promises made to the same people He had left, the people of Israel

6        It is my opinion, the enemy had blinded the mind of Peter as to the truth of Jesus coming back from the tomb, and he has blinded the minds of many believers who believe that Matthew 24:29,30 was fulfilled by the events of A.D. 70, and therefore, not the Second Coming of Christ.

7        So, read Matthew 24:29,30 and don’t let anyone deceive you as to its meaning

II   Accepting Matthew 24:29,30 as predicting the Second Coming, then the chapter may be divided into two sections.

1 Matthew 24:4-26  some major events before Christ returns

2 Matthew 24:27-51  some major events after  Christ returns.

Remember, if Jesus Christ is not coming back to this earth, there is no Second Coming, for at the Rapture He only comes to the air, and we go to meet Him there

III  The events in Matthew 24:4-26 must belong to the great tribulation

            1. Matthew 24:21 a time of trouble such as was not nor ever shall be again

Revelation 16:1 God pours out his wrath on the earth.  Note Revelation 16:18

1 Thessalonians 1:10  Jesus- delivered us from the wrath to come

1 Thessalonians 5:8-11 we will obtain salvation from wrath by Rapture

Romans 14:11 this is the aspect of our salvation that is nearer than when we

 believed.

2. Whatever problems presented in Matthew 24:4-26, none are Church problems

These all belong to Israel and the world

2 Timothy 3:1-13 outline last-day Church problems

IV  Having laid a foundation, we now proceed to give more reasons for believing that Matthew 24 does not pertain to the Church.

Matthew 24:4,5  many shall come saying “I am Christ”

John 1:41 “Christ” is the New Testament word for the Old Testament word

“Messiah”

So we ask:

1 Who had been promised a Messiah?

2  Who had been looking  for a Messiah?

            3. Who is still looking  for their Messiah?

4  Romans 9:4  the promises were made to Israel

5.  Ephesians 2:11-12  we who are not Jews by natural birth, “are strangers from the covenants of promise, without Christ, without hope”

            6. Titus 2:13  The Church is living ,looking for the Promiser!
