01-  Salvation and Service

Lesson I

September 03, 2006

Text  2 Timothy 2: 15-16

            Study…the word of truth

The Responsibility of Timothy the preacher  2Timothy 4:2

The Privilege of every believer  Acts 17:10-11

            Shew   thyself a good workman.

Rightly dividing  the word of truth-  the Scriptures

Shun   vain babblings…they increase more ungodliness

Isaiah 8:20  if what is said is not Scriptural it is not Spiritual

I  We purpose to divide Salvation from Service

Salvation is what the Lord does for us.  He has done what we could not do for ourselves.  Our salvation has to do with our going to Heaven

Service has to do with what we do for the Lord after we are saved.  It has to do with how we live after we are saved.

II  First Contrast.

Salvation is a gift from God

Ephesians 2:8  saved…a gift from God

Romans 6:23  the gift of God is eternal life

There are three ways of obtaining things

One may work.  Ephesians 2:9,  Romans 11:6

One may inherit Romans 5:10   inheritance is not for enemies

Receive as a gift  Ephesians 2:8  gift of God

Service is work or works for God

Titus 1:16  profess-  works deny

Titus 2:7  pattern of good works

Titus 2:14  peculiar…zealous of good works

Titus 3:1  ready to every good work

Titus 3:8  careful to maintain good works

Titus 3:14  learn to maintain good works

Revelation 2:2  we know the subject is not salvation

We don’t work to get saved.  You don’t  work to keep saved.  You work because you are saved.

Acts 11:14  you are not saved  by doing works, but by hearing words.

III  Second Contrast

            Salvation is Coming to Christ

John 1:40-42   he brought him to Jesus

We may consider this the call to salvation

            Service is following after Jesus

Mark 1:1-20  come ye after me

Mark 3:13-14  this is the call to special service
