Lesson XX

Time and Eternity

Lesson II

The Altar

February 22, 2009

Introduction

From the book of Genesis chapter three, to the book of Malachi, the Bible is filled with stories of many altars built by men where blood was shed.

These altars pointed backward to man’s ruin by the fall but also, pointed forward to man’s redemption through the blood of His cross.  Colossians 1:20.

I concluded last week’s lesson by saying I would read some notes compiled and arranged in 1993

I  To build an altar was a manifest act of faith

      Hebrews 11:4

It did not give him faith but it did manifest the faith he already had.

II  To build an altar was to acknowledge the God of Heaven

            Hebrews 11:6

The altar did not make God real but acknowledged that God is real

III  To build an altar was to say “I am a sinner therefore worthy of death”

            Luke 23:39-41

Only sinners who know they are sinners need the altar of sacrifice

IV  To build an altar,  offer an animal in sacrifice, was to believe in substitution

            Luke 23:25,  2 Corinthians 5:14,15

Jesus died for Barabbas, although that man may not have realized it

V   To build an altar and shed blood, was to say, only blood can cleanse from my sin

            Hebrews 9:22 , Acts 20:28

There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin

VI  To build an altar and shed blood was to say “I have faith in an atonement”

            Psalm 32:1  , Romans 4:7

The blood of bulls and goats covered sin, the blood of Christ takes it away

VII To build and altar and offer a sacrifice was to say “the real sacrifice is coming”

            Genesis 22:7   John 1:29

The Old Testament  asked: where is the Lamb?  The New says: Behold the Lamb

III  Conclude

Hebrews 10:3 the altar was the place of remembrance of sin

Galatians 3:13  the cross the place of redemption from the curse of sin
